Document Summary

The human animal: ecology: study of organism interactions with other organisms and the environment. Information in the book shattered many beliefs and caused controversy in society: ex: that the world was only a few thousand years old, started the era of evolutionary biology. Natural selection: a process in which individuals that have certain inherited traits tend to survive and reproduce at higher rates than other individuals because of those traits. Evolution acts on heritable traits that vary among individuals in a population: heritable traits: genes that code and cause certain traits to occur, vary within a population, passed down from last generation. Adaptations occur when they improve the fitness of individuals: allows them to be more successful in survival, may seem to be a burden in one way but are very helpful in another. Ex: peacocks having to carry large feathers but are used to be more attractive to mates.
