Document Summary

Humans caused 6th mass extinction, human accelerated global extinction rates. Knowledge of what affects patterns of biodiversity is needed to help improve the situation. Similar species in similar climates around the world. Altering number of habitats will alter amount of species it will be able to sustain. When area varies enormously, area along can sometimes explain species richness variation. Macarthur and wilson (1967) math theory (distance) individuals can immigrate more easily to islands that are close to the mainland. Near islands> more individuals arrive>more species likely represented among those individuals that arrive. Island close to mainland = easier to find, mortality in travelling decreases. Smaller pop that has high diversity changes ii. iii. iv. 2. (size) extinction rates lower on large islands i. ii. iii. iv. Increased area = lower extinction rates = more species. Can support more species on big island = larger pop size = lower risk of extinction.
