If you know the average temperature of a place you may be able to rate this to species and species diversity. And you can see that if you increase the temperature the diversity of life also grows. Plants pulling carbon into green biomass (inhale) When plants natural decay they will release carbon back into the atmosphere (exhale) Carbon is also released by other disturbances like res whether people doing them purposefully or the res occurring naturally.
