Document Summary

Genetic markers are inherited variations that are used to test genetic hypotheses. Genetic markers tell us something about genes / dna. It is hard to tell if the visible marker is due to one specific gene or multiple genes that interact. It is hard to control environmental interactions on the visible markers; the environment can affect the expression / phenotypes. It is hard to tell if an individual is heterozygote based on just phenotype. There are not that many visible markers that we can detect; the number of visible markers is limited and hard to find. With dna markers, we don"t have to rely on gene expression in order to study it. Rather than using observable traits, we can use molecular markers (i. e. : variations in the dna sequence) Polymorphic molecular markers are the primary types of markers used in contemporary genetics studies. Like visible markers, it is something that shows variance.
