Darwin"s big idea: assembled a towering edifice of evidence and argument for evolution. Combined his ideas with work of many others (ex. Malthus (demography), lyell, wallace & lamarck - also had a theory of evol: a story, not just of how the patterns of biodiversity on earth came into being, but of how it works. Voyage of the beagle: collected many fossils and living organisms, uniformitarianism: observable natural processes responsible for events in the past. Studied geology while reading principles of geology by lyell. "seeing this gradation and diversity of structure in one small, intimately related group of birds, one might really fancy that from an original paucity of birds in this archipelago, one species had been taken and modified for different ends. " These finches were all from distinct regions: regulars could tell where the finches or tortoises came from (which island) by just looking at their characteristic, different selective pressure on each island.
