Document Summary

Control of microbial growth disinfectants and antiseptics. Three approaches for the control of microbial growth. Chemical - reduce by killing: disinfectants and antiseptics. Physical - reduce by killing: heat, ultraviolet. Mechanical elimination - these methods do not reduce by killing, they reduce by removing: cleaning, filtration. The elimination of visible adherent dirt (blood, proteins and debris), dust or other foreign matter by manual or chemical processes: does not infer the presence or absence of microorganisms. Ex: take a pile of shit, sterilize it and still no one will want to eat on it lol. Cleanliness is a relative term, no way to determine cleanliness. The use of chemical or physical agents to kill or inhibit the growth of microorganisms. Disinfectants: chemical products used on inanimate objects. Germicides: chemical products which can be used on either animate (living) or inanimate things. Antiseptics: chemical products used on living tissues. Contaminant: non-intentional presence of a microorganism, contaminant = intruder.
