Treatment of an invading organism: a life is saved. If the invading microorganism does not develop a resistance it will die. 1945 - a. fleming warns that the inappropriate use of penicillin will lead to the selection of resistant bacteria. A few years later the first resistant strains appear. The number of resistant bacteria is increasing at an alarming rate. 1990: 300 metric tons of antibiotics are used in humans. Patient wants to get better asap; physician wants to satisfy patient. Cheaper to just prescribe antibiotics than to find out what the organism is. Cost: antibiotherapy is less expensive than other tests and treatments. Publicity and pressure from pharmaceutical companies to sell products. Born with the resistance, did not adapt to achieve this resistance. Streptomycetes are resistant to the antibiotics they produce.
