All the mechanisms used by the human body to protect itself against foreign invaders the antigens. Immune system can"t distinguish whether the foreign invader is good or not. Immune system tries to protect the human, but if it can"t it will try to kill the human to protect the species. Innate system no education - incapable of learning. Recruit and activate the 3rd line of defense (alarm system) The interior is sterile unless there is an infection. In the man, all cavities represent the interior. In the woman, all the cavities, except for the pelvic cavity, represent the interior. The gastrointestinal tract and part of the respiratory tract are external. Nothing internal is colonized by microorganisms, everything external is colonized by microorganisms. Thick keratinized cells high salt concentration (low aw) Cilia which back up whatever got down that far. Microorganisms located within specific sites of healthy individuals. Bad side of flora: source of pathogenic organisms (opportunists)
