Initial infection in a healthy individual: host will become susceptible to other pathogens which leads to secondary infection. Secondary: occurs in a person weakened by a primary infection. Ex: hiv - primary infection immune system becomes compromised, opportunists take advantage of the compromise in immune system and those are secondary infections. Includes meeting (host-pathogen), the penetration, adherence and growth. Average duration of 2-3 days, several weeks or months. Precedes the expression of nonspecific symptoms: ex. Represents the beginning of the pathogenic activity: symptoms not because of pathogen but because of second line of defense (inflammatory response) Interactions between pathogen and host are maximal: active contribution of the inflammatory response, specific and non-specific symptoms. The acquired immune response is initiated, there are no antibodies present.
