Document Summary

September 27, 2016: anatomy of eukaryotic cells. Present in several eukaryotic microorganisms (ex. yeast, fungi, algae, diatoms) Composed of various polysaccharides (ex. cellulose, chitin, glucans) But, smaller surface area to volume ratio - less ef cient passage. Increases uidity and permeability to nonpolar compounds. Unique to eukaryotes (only exception is mycoplasms - human pathogens that have evolved to be similar to human membranes) Internal protein network of micro laments, intermediate laments, and microtubules. Allows motility (cell can change its shape and contract to move by sliding) Flagella and cilia: exible cylinders composed of tubulin protein ( agellin in bacteria) Extension of the cytoskeleton - originates from inside of the cell. Like how a dog"s tail is an extension of the skeleton. Covered by the plasma membrane - doesn"t go through it. Like how a dog"s tail is covered by the skin.
