Males can mate with many females - polygynous. Polygamy (many genes) can be broken down into polygyny and polyandry (many males with one female ) Males prefer to be polygynous, females prefer to be monogamous and aren"t as polygynous as males. Male can only hold one brood and this reduces his potential of increasing reproductive output. Male wants to be polygamous but female forces him to be monogamous. When female is prevented from stopping him, male is successful at being polygamous. When female is untethered most males can"t emit pheromone for very long. When female is tethered , much greater span of time that individual males are capable of engaging in this call to call other females. Female prevents males from engaging in something that"ll decrease her own tness. Monogamy in mammals is very rare so if we see it, it has to have a clear bene t.
