Document Summary

Slide 2-4: phenotypic plasticity allows them to subdivide the environment, they spent different amounts of time in different trees. Niche portioning: may take on a genetic component: character displacement, changes is bill size fight competition. Slide 5-6: allopatric: in different places, horn size is similar when they"re in different spots, would be competing for digging sites, sympatric, distribution of sizes doesn"t overlap. Real communities: competitons is go great for so many resources that the pairwise interactions are weak, but the some of all is strong. Allelopathy preventing species from inhabiting that space: territorial, compensatory dynamics: both strive at one poiny, not at the same time. Plant mass reduction by 2/3 due to biomass. When biomass is low, not hindered by competition. Checkerboard: never get both species preent on the island at the same time. Though it would be easy for both to colonise at the same time (forbidden combination) Such close competitors, that they can never coexist.
