BIO 3115 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Deme, Genetic Variability, Habitat Destruction
Document Summary
Break down a population into source and sink. Depends on growth of a population where the situation is good. Deme = semi isolated local populations inhabiting area of suitable habitat, separated from other populations by unsuitable habitat. Important to consider when determining areas to conserve. Noticed that north population was a source for the south. Not just a breeding pair but also genetic material. Real life, they persist for over 70 --> immigration is important. About 3 individuals per year seems a must. Need at least 2 per year immigrating to reduce variability lost. If not, 20% loss in 100 years or so. Geometry, size and spatial distributions of suitable habitat in the landscape can have a significant effect on extinction risk. Carnivores and predators usually need a huge area. Moving from isolated area to isolated are can have problems. Need to consider their movement when developing land. Corridors are important --> don"t create barriers for their movement.
