BPS 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Curing Of Tobacco, Nicorette, Health Canada
Document Summary
History: the life expectancy is 10 years lower in people who smoke. It wasn"t considered dangerous back then because people didn"t smoke as much. These two factor increase exposure to toxic substances. Nicotine: the addictive substance of the cigarette, 2mg/cigarette is required to addict the smoker, one cigarette delivers 2mg of nicotine to an addict - nicorette gum is supposed to help you quit smoking (psychological aspect). How it works: nicotine acts on acetylcholine receptors (transmit info throughout body and brain). The lethal dose of nicotine is 60mg for an adult. A cigar contains more than that but most of it is burned before it reaches the person"s body: stimulates the heart muscle - increases heart rate (approx. 5% of smoker heart attacks caused by it) #1 toxic material in tobacco smoke: reduces oxygen carrying capacity of blood. This is caused by the co sticking tightly to hemoglobin and takes several hours to remove from the blood.
