This laboratory focuses on extraction of caffeine from strongly brewed black tea, which can contain anywhere from 30-75 mg of caffeine per every 250 ml of beverage. The techniques used in this experiment were required to isolate and purify an organic product using extraction and purification through a newly introduced method: sublimation. In addition, students refreshed on thin layer chromatography (tlc) theory and process. Only part a was performed in this experiment. Extraction of organic products is performed by the isolation of organic and aqueous layers in a separatory flask. Through isolation, students are able to focus of extracting their desired product. In this experiment, sublimation is used to purify the extracted caffeine product.
