Document Summary

Bonding between metals and nonmetals is usually ionic. Cations have higher zeff (fewer shielding electrons) than neutral atoms, and have a smaller size. Anions have lower zeff (more shielding electrons) and have a larger size. Covalent compound: atoms are combined to form discrete molecular units (molecules) Metals: atoms are packed together in a lattice. Ionic compounds: cations and anions are packed together in a lattice. In an ionic lattice, some spheres are positively charged and others are negatively charged. The cations and anions in the ionic lattice have difference sizes. Nb: both lattices are neutral: in a metallic lattice, it"s because all atoms are neutral, in an ionic lattice, it"s because the charges from the cations and anions balance each other out. The type of ionic lattice formed will depend on the charge and the size of the ions involved.
