Other film centres emerging around same time. Vying for dominance, relevance in their markets. Mid-1930s - vibrant chinese silent film industry. Ruan lingyu = beloved chinese silent film actress. Yazujiro ozu, i was born, but (1932) 1920s - indian cinema of various kinds. Tensions and relationships between centres and genres of film. 1895: lumieres, edison using film for the first time. 17th century: using light to capture images. Camera obscura = room with aperture that lets in light. Darkened room through mediation of lens yields image of outside world. Edison tried to get synchronized sound on a gramophone. Couldn"t get sound and image to lined up. Understand film as a language, grammar of film. Not inherent in media, had to be developed. Take passages of film and breakdown into component parts. Tension between two different visions, understandings of what cinema is. French film critic called cinema an industrial art. Commercial pressure higher than other art forms.
