Basic constituent of steel: most abundant metallic material (4-5%) Can be found in: commonly used b/c of purity (7% pure iron) Limonite (brown ore): minor iron ore hematite (red ore): most. Wrought iron: <0. 1% carbon (low carbon), small amount of slag (<3%), workable, corrosion resistant. Cast iron: 5% carbon (high carbon), strong, hard brittle. Raw materials (coal, limestone, iron pellets, oxygen) go in the top opening of the furnace. Coke: burns air and produces heat, and reacts to form carbon monoxide to produce iron oxide. Oxygen: produces heat and carbon monoxide = allows coke to burn. A blast of hot air is introduced from below. Molten slag and molten iron is produced and released from the bottom of the furnace. Waste gases are released from the reactions. Types of furnaces for refining pig iron to steel: 1. Electric arc: pig iron: intermediate product of smelting iron ore from the blast furnace.
