Lecture 8: dark ages: migrations and the alphabet. He is credited with the alphabet: phoenicians, came with cadmus. Terms: dark/iron age, end of mycenaean palaces, there was the end of civilization (end of social hierarchy due to smaller villages, end of redistributive economy meaning no need for writing, loss of technical knowledge, and no new monumental buildings. 320 sites in bronze age down to 40 sites. No more kings and generals, just chiefs of small villages. People move across the aegean sea: apse, curved end on the back of a house, sub-mycenaean, early iron age, protogeometric, use multiple brushes and compasses to create nicer pottery. Early geometric design on pottery: geometric, math and pattern stuff (from grade 4, heroon, first monumental building of the dark ages (around the very end) built on. Looks like a nichorian chief house, except this also has two burial pits, one for horses and one for humans.
