CLA 2101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Kamares Ware, Peak Sanctuaries, Michael Ventris
Document Summary
The middle bronze age of crete and the cyclades. When evans excavated knossos, he didn"t find any temples. This makes us question if a king really lived there. The palace is the ritual and political centre of crete. No administration was used to control temples, but this wasn"t the case on crete. Michael ventris deciphered linear b to be an early version of greek. These were from when the palaces were destroyed. Renfrew said that the palace is a redistributive centre controlling the agricultural hinterland. The king served three toles: political, religious, and economic. The elites were putting on the banquets for the rituals that they had. This may not have been what the peaks were used for at first, but later on, for sure. These items have a high value but don"t take much to produce. This shows signs that the elites are also going to these places. Kamares ware was found in sanctuaries and palaces like knossos.
