Gods visited there and not confined sources of fresh water were considered holy home to nymphs (half goddess creatures) springs and rivers. Greek climate is hard, middle eastern climate (not much rain and summers are hot and dry) ; not many crops. Crops that did grow were associated with certain gods. The ancient greeks were not always living in greece.
