The run rests in the river at night. To reach the underworld you have to go to the dark side (west) to the beyond or the end of the earth. Dead people and monsters/creatures that live there. Heaven/sky = roof, cover protecting the earth. Hades and tartarus: forces of evil live there, people are punished here. Gods live on the earth at the highest mountain. Other mountains called atlas, both hold up the earth. Homer spends pages on describing the shield. Gives the concept of earth through the 5 sections.
