• What we learn from communication models
• 1. Communication can be intentional or unintentional
• We both give and give off information
• 2. Communication is irreversible and unrepeatable
• You can never take it back
• Repair attempt- attempt to repair something
• 3. Sending and receiving occurs simultaneously, with both verbal and nonverbal elements
• We never abandon the role of sender
• 4. Communication has a relational as well as content dimension
• The content meaning of a message gives information about the topic being discussed
• The relational meaning of a message refers to the nature of the relationship of those
communicating
• Paul Watzlawick- one to propose these above axioms of communication (1-3)
• Early thinker of communication- asserted we know 1-3 for sure.
9
• Content messages
• Literal meaning of the words- context of the situation
• E: a ou see e i offie
• Content is not as obvious
10
• Relational messages
• Helps us understand the likely meaning of the content message by what dynamics there are
between the two people
• Ex. shows relational dimensions of conversation.
• We a deteie hat is goig o oeal uaes touh, gestues, …, the foalit
with which they address each other (linguistic cues); e.g. Ms. Brown vs. first name.
• Context itself- background of individuals
12
• What we learn from communication models (cont.)
• 5. Communication is a dynamic ongoing process
• We all experience change and are in a constant state of flux
• As time moves on, a lot of things change. Our timing changes, relationships change; where
we were is not where we are now.
• 6. Communication has a cultural component
• Cultural background comes with you
• All of the epeiees ou’e had. We all hae diffeees eause e’e eah grown up
individually
• Standpoint theory: our background and experiences influences our ability to communicate
• The more we broaden our experience, the more we build our cognitive complexity- the
more we engage our brain in learning experiences that enable us to understand
