CMN 1148 Lecture 6: Communicating verbally
Document Summary
Chapter 6 | lecture 6 | communicating verbally. Language is our most important communication tool, and allows us to make sense of the world and share that sense with others. Although language is symbolic and meanings are in people, we have developed conventions to help us understand each other. How sounds combine to form words (i. e. the same word in different languages sounds different) It is easier to learn a language that follows our phonological rules. The way that symbols can be arranged; the rules of structure. The meaning of statements; the shared meanings that we have agreed upon. Given that there are often many potential meanings, we rely on pragmatic rules. To tell us the likely meaning of the words, given the contact, the relationship and so on: language is culture bound. Different words and symbols are used for the same referent in different cultures (what do you call a carbonated beverage?) Some words only exist in some cultures.
