The process of simultaneously giving and receiving information, verbal and nonverbal: there should never be a contradiction between the verbal and nonverbal methods of communicating. Provide a common vocabulary or jargon that allows us to talk about a topic. Explain processes how and why we communicate. Visually depict relationships in the different parts of the communication act. Models help those who are visual leaners understand better. Models can be: linear, interactive, transactional, and critical. A simple communication model with a sender transferring a message containing information to a receiver. Our field started with speech communication, in which we had a simple approach that modeled this model. Focused on the act of persuading, based off of 3 appeals: source credibility (ethos) This is a communicator"s attractiveness to the audience (trustworthiness, competency, status, sociability, dynamism) What makes us comfortable with the speaker is knowing they are one of us (when they appeal to the general public)
