Hypothesis: states a causal relationship between 2 variables. Variables vary: a variable must have at least 2 categories. Ex. men are more likely too blah blah . The independent variable is not men, it is gender. People with blue eyes are more likely to blah blah . The independent variable is not eyes, it is eye colour. Ex. the more caffeine you consume in an afternoon, the more anxious you will feel. The dependent variable is not the feeling, it is the level of anxiousness. Changes in independent variable cause changes in dependent variable. Increase in independent variable causes increase in dependent variable. Decrease in independent variable causes decrease in dependent variable. Intervene/ mediating variable: a variable that better explains the dependent variable. Ex. environmental factors, personal factors, health, age, financial status. You want to control as many of these factors as you can in an experiment. Deductive approach to research: thinking in terms of testing hypotheses.
