Characteristics of paralanguage: pronunciation, articulation, loudness, pitch, duration, regularity, silence, quality. Pronunciation: prejudice exists against certain accents, ie. subtext surrounding trump"s band of deplorables comment. Articulation: how articulation or lack of affects communication, context of groups affects choices in articulation, formal group -> formal articulation, informal group -> informal articulation. Loudness: affects mood of verbal message, affects perception of communicator, excessively loud -> arrogant, excessively quiet -> shy. Pitch: range used in speech, positions affect use of pitch: news anchors, commentators, etc, upspeech vs. downspeech, things to look for: swings in pitch, absence of appropriate pitch. Duration: how long the sound is, used to add emphasis, pausing, punctuating a sentence. Regularity: speeding up vs. slowing down, things to look for: consistency or lack of, used to show emphasis or excitement. Silence: we don"t use silence enough, selective silence and withholding. Quality: timber, tone, clarity, consistency, distinctiveness, voices we like: morgan freeman, adele, etc, why? clear, warm, brings you in.
