One can share character traits with many people without requiring any active engagement on ones" part: sharing identities implies active engagement in order to identify with any particular group or activity. Active engagement indicates that one"s identity is formed through cultural processes: the multifaceted nature of our identities is experienced and negotiated by us in our everyday life. Social categorization; the grouping of people based on skin-colour, dress, language, occupation, interest, region or desirable/undesirable qualities etc: these groups (subgroups) exist within the larger cultural environment. Identities formed as a result of group membership can be anchored at the individual and collective level. Membership groups; groups to which an individual belongs. Non-membership groups; groups to which an individual does not belong. Both groups can be categorized in two ways: voluntary; political affiliation, occupation, religion etc. or, involuntary; age, race, sex etc. Groups whose norms, aspiration, and values shape the behavior of its members.
