Epistemology: the study of how we know what we know. Epistemological stance: the position you take on what knowledge is. Paradigms of knowing: look for these paradigms when reading! Discovery: assuming that there"s a truth in the world and your experiment is trying to find it, truth is discoverable. Interpretive (social scientific): there are many truths in the world, how we find these truths depends on how we interpret this information. Ex. you interpret the information and make a theory about it. Critical: doesn"t make use of formal research methods so we"re not gonna talk about it. Theories: drive research question and data collection. Justification: we explain what they mean and justify this explanation. Content analysis: counting the number of times a word was mentioned. Theory: comes from literature review, used to guide research, specifies the relationship between the variables. Research questions: ask about the relationship between 2 (or more) variables (dependent and independent)
