CRM 3306 Lecture 13: Recovering from Victimization
Document Summary
3 stages of stress: mobilization, consumption, draining of energy. 3 stages of stress: 2 ways of looking at it: alarm (fight or flight response), resistance (adjust to the perceived threat, levels are normalized), exhaustion (depletion of resources) Isolation from views of others (besides captor) Genuine belief that escape is not possible. Prisoners of war and cult members for example. Not reflective of actual risk of victimization. Monday, february 29, 2016: buying alarms or taking martial arts classes. Reduction in social activities/engagement: self-imposed curfew, preferring to work during the day rather than night. Some people experience less fear after victimization: older women have a great deal of resilience. Techniques of neutralization through methods of denial. Withdrawal from community life: don"t ask neighbours to watch your kids. Can take more time for police to reach some areas. Direct fear, actual response to something that happens. Concrete fear, you are actually afraid of.
