CRM 1300 Lecture 14: CRM1300 – Minority and Aboriginal Experiences in Criminal Justice System
Document Summary
Crm1300 minority and aboriginal experiences in criminal justice system. This has very serious consequences for confidence in the criminal justice system on the part of racial minorities and by extension, the broader political economic system which it upholds. Statistics on race and crime are rarely collected and disseminated in canada. In 1994, the commission on systemic racism in the ontario criminal justice system conducted a survey of 1200 toronto adults aged 18 and over who identified themselves as either black, chinese, or white The results indicate that three out of four black torontonians believe that the police treat members of their racial group worse than they treat white people. Furthermore, 60% of the black respondents also felt that members of their racial group are treated worse by the criminal courts. Also, over half of the white respondents reported that they think black people are treated worse by the police, and a third think blacks are treated worse by the courts.
