Strain theories have had very different meanings over time. 2 main different types of strain theory (older macro, newer micro) Division of labor in society (1893): as societies modernize, shared norms break down leading to a condition of anomie (normlessness) Anomie occurs in periods of rapid social change (ex: industrial revolution) From farming cities, those who move from the farm to the city will experience collective anomie and chaos as they are no longer guided by expectations of behaviour and deviance increases. There is a balance between functional and dysfunctional aspects of deviance.
