From the lateran councils to the renaissance (ca. The feudal system of government provided a mode land of distribution; along with ownership of lands, feudal nobles were accorded certain judicial powers over their vassals and farming classes laboring on their lands. The entire complex system of feudal landholding and its supporting economic system of manorialism existed to field a combat army of mounted knights. Under feudalism, landholdings were established in self-sufficient economic entities called manors. When a revival of trade caused a growing demand for new products, small commercial villages and towns attracted excess labour from manors, and enterprising men saw that merchantile activity was a path to wealth. Renaissance- these changes were big throughout this time, but they were accompanied by a growing interest in learning and experimentation. Ancient systems of science began to be challenged. Papacy fought a battle against heresies by criminal prosecutions and on the battle field where a new system of criminal procedure would form.
