Reaction formation : response to shame and guilt that youth are feeling at school, feel comfort, pride, not feeling the failures at school or society in general, sensed as valued in gang. Normal adaptation for low ses people low ses children do not have same values provided by their parents as middle or upper classes gang involvement deviant careers & contact with criminal subculture.
