Social changes in us in 1960"s and 70"s: the consensus was disintegrating. Youth culture (elvis presley, a new cultural form, birth of rock and roll, fashion, music, activities). Social scientists: rethink their conception of society, social order and deviancy. These social movement emphasize choice and rebellion over passive acceptance and conformity. Uniform crime report vs survey reports (reaction of authorities rather than the actual deviance). Challenge the ontology of crime (ontology means regardless of your culture certain aspects will always be seen as bad, inherently criminal). As a theory: is a framework fro building theory that envisions society as the product of the everyday interactions of individuals. 1)self: how one see"s him/ her self (depends on how other perceive us) 2)symbol: anything that stands for something else ex word, gesture, badge. A group of pf school students was split into two. One group was publically labelled as slow and stupid and the other half brilliant.
