These various theoretical pockets that have been established through theorization and testing often determine the type of methods you can use. The theory you use usually determines the type of methods you use. Social ecology: nothing to do with the individual themselves, critique of positivist, qualitative methods. Social control: quantitative, individually focused theories of crime, theorize about society, why don"t people commit crime, need large number of participants. Post modern/cultural crim: qualitative, sceptical of stats, exploring different meanings and relationships, doesn"t accept a static definition of crime, crime is in the eye of the beholder. Crime science: quantitative, positivist interpretations and approach"s, aren"t interested in understanding experiences, crime is defined and answered through the type of methods we borrow from the natural sciences. Tools of natural sciences can help us answer questions on crime.
