In a sense of transforming individuals: people end up being able to relate to prisons and prisoners because of our relationship to total institutions. Goffman: dramaturgical approach, fronts provides others with impressions. In relation to theatre, we put on customs and makeup (a front) and it gives people an impression with who we are and who we want to be - we want to be actors on a stage. It cements in the eyes of others who you are. It becomes apart of your personal narrative: he uses the social world as a theatre - social life is a stage. Prison as a total institution: total institution -> small, segregated society. Institutional life: watchful eye of centralized authority. Are people doing the activities and how effectively are they doing so: the key for a total institution is that blocks of individuals are bureaucratically organized in such a way to allow maximize the authority to survey them.
