CRM 2306 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Air Freshener, Hegemonic Masculinity, Subculture
Document Summary
Prison as a quasi domestic sphere: they"re there all the time which is why it becomes a home like environment. Ex prisoners might put up pictures, personalize their cells, use air freshener etc. When you are constantly around the same people, then you"re likely to see the same things occur as in a home environment like fights, arguments, etc. This affects the relationship between inmates and inmates and correctional officers. Much of what the men do in prison are highly feminised jobs like cooking, laundry, caring for other inmates etc. Officers get to leave but they are still doing time while working their shift. Captive group prisoner identity is painful (you"re dealing with adults that are now being treated as children). Resentment of prisoners (they went from being free, individual people, to completely dependent on the institution and such) > resentment of staff (verbal abuse, physical abuse, being threatened).
