Document Summary
Article: dining in: the symbolic power of food in prison. Why look at food in prison: food becomes a symbol of your lost freedom, survival and adaptation. Prisoners engaged in various forms of resistance when it came to food: most food was very processed food (no say in how their food is prepared) If we have a highly sugar and processed food this could lead to health issues. Link to health: starchy, sugary, processed foods lead to health concerns. Challenges for prisoners: ethnic people had a hard time accessing ethnic relevant food that they grew up with, no special seasonings or spices, visitors are limited to vending machine food. Specifically, difficult for people with children or babies. People get conditioned into sitting in the same seat every day. Can start fights, riots and verbal altercations. Very designated spots, separated by offense, gang affiliation, or colour. Application to prison experience/identity: food can be part of your identity.
