Document Summary

Anomie and media: goals =/ means strain, anomie: a sense of normlessness. There are conditions in society that have eradicated social norms completely. However, people are still held together because different norms emerge and they are embraced by society. People are encouraged to do whatever it takes to achieve these signifiers of status. In these societies, even those who do not need to resort to using illegitimate means will feel a sense of anomie: media provides exemplars of aspirational lifestyles. Revival of anomic conditions: proliferation of transgressive forms of excitement, growth of electronic communications. This is cited as both a cause of anomie and a potential way of making people feel more connected in a disconnected world. We are using these means of communications more and more: to give ourselves status and to announce ourselves as here and alive, people engage in these types of activities.
