Document Summary

Assignment 1 - solutions (due: 26 september, 2018 by 17:00) A soil profile consists of 10 m-thick fine sand (void ratio of 0. 6) overlying a layer of clay extending to a great depth. Groundwater level is at 3 m below the ground surface but, due to capillary rise, the soil is saturated to a height of 2 m above the groundwater table. In the vadose zone between the ground surface and 1 m depth, the degree of saturation is 90%. Calculate and plot the distribution of vertical total and effective stress and porewater pressure with depth in the sand. For your plots use control points located at depths of 0, 1, 3 and 10 m below the ground surface. A farmer requires two steel silos to store wheat. Each silo is 10 m in external diameter and 12 m high. The foundation for each silo is a circular concrete slab of the same external diameter as the silo.
