Second language learner"s linguistic system (competence) at a given point in time: constantly improving language and interlanguage is evolving, level of confidence, and competence. Interlanguage is the system in-between l1 and target language. Gradually moving to proficient-like proficiency: knowledge of the second language system at that exact time. Trial and error methodology, until becoming more stable. In that stage, there"s space for back- sliding, in which you learn a term and use it correctly, then make an error. Finding out the causes of these errors allows you to understand how the learner thinks (cognitive processes), and in doing so, help them better as a language teacher. Adjust teaching according to commonly repeated errors. Discuss the following pairs of concepts related to errors: Mistake: know the rule, but a performance error occurs, slip-up: correct it because you understand that you made a mistake.
