-emphasis is placed on human rights at the end of WWII
-the Charter confirms and enforces human rights and freedoms; cannot be changed
regardless of what type of development approach was happening
-emphasis on the importance of the rights and freedoms of all individuals persons
-was considered as a new perspective after the Second World War
-when the UN was created and after the UNDHR was released, development was perceived
and understood as the ideal of differently nations developing themselves in the way they want
-was a more personal and tailored way of development
-1944 and 1948 focused on human-centered development approaches
-1949; the idea of international development was presented to the international community

-down from 37% in 1990
-less poverty but more inequality
-in developed and developing countries alike, the poorest half of the population often control
less than 10% of the its wealth
-the richest 1% have seen their share of global wealth increase
-trade related aspects of intellectual property rights give developed nations power to
monopolize the market (and charge up the ass for refined/manufactured products)
-post-structuralism criticizes the world’s economic and political structures
-today’s worlds of trade, political, economics, human rights are wrong, since they are
producing problems for developing countries
-how can we move beyond this?
-is different from Marxism approaches — post development is not subversive
-argues that both approaches are essentialist or reductionist approaches (that say they
want to reduce everyone to their own understand thus they disregard poverty and
inequality and say their approach is essential)
-represents an alternative view into development; did not want to destroy the world, revolt,
etc
-want to find a different way and address failures of the mainstream approaches
-false promises of the mainstream theory of development
-development as futurism
-development from now onward
-is a progressive, linear orientation
