How selfish soeverr man may be supposed, there are evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortune of others. Imagination: we put ourselves in the positions of others. Ability to make sense of that others are feeling. Our reponses correspond to some degree with what others are feeling. We sympathize more with joy than sorrow/pain. We thereby sympathize with the rich (more so than with the poor) Bcuz we enjoy sympathizing and being sympathized with, and bcuz the rich are joyful (amd we sympathize with joy), we desire and pursue wealth. We parade out riches and hide our poverty. It tells us that we should pursue wealth but its not clear that wealth makes us happy.
