Moving away from sails which are slow and dependent on weather to steam which is more reliable, paddle steamers, then propellers, engine driven by coal makes steam and moves propellor. Propellor is harder to destroy since its under water than sails. Africa was deadly, yellow fever, malaria, so later in the 19th century is only when it is credible to go there and not have an awful time. Taxation power, mobilize people, and mobilize industrial resources which is put toward imperial expansion. First one looks like wooden ship, still using combination of wind and paddles.
