A rhetorical device may only been used once (or occasionally) in an essay, whereas a method of development is used throughout the essay to help develop the argument; A method of development is how the author organizes his/her information and/or. An author can use more than one method of development. Examples of common methods used to develop an argument. Allusion: indirect reference to a person, place, object or event, assumed to be known to the reader; can be drawn from history, geography, literature, religion, etc. The writer does not explain the background information, but assumes the knowledge on the part of the reader; the effectiveness of the allusion depends on the knowledge shared by both the reader and writer. Analogy: helps the reader understand something unfamiliar by comparing it to something well-known; a comparison such that the reader will infer that two objects or events that are alike in one respect, will be alike in another respect.
