An essay is a written reflection of the writer"s view on a topic. Essays can range from highly formal to highly informal, from scholarly to personal, from long (20+ pages) to short (1 page) Think of an academic essay as the writer"s contribution to the academic conversation. The word essay derives from the french verb essayer. Note: communicating anything using just words is hard (if in doubt, try to explain to someone how to tie a shoelace using only words). Communicating complex ideas is even more challenging than communicating basic instructions. Make it your best attempt, but don"t let perfectionism hold you back: an essay will never be perfect. An essay contains the writer"s opinion about a topic. This is an essential component of an essay. If it doesn"t contain your opinion, it"s not an essay. A successful essay does not just state an pinion. Opinions in themselves are subjective and uninteresting.
