Document Summary
In this course, we emphasize two key themes in human geography: to understand the ways in which space influences the organization of society. Emphasis of space: to understand the role of scales in constructing interconnections between people and places. The role of space and place in our society, politics and the economy. Produced due to social, economic and political processes. Place is much more specific (meaning) and has more cultural and social values attached to it emotional as a concept. Absolute space (mathematical space: meters, miles, km. Measures of time or cost in relation to physical distance: experiential or cultural space. A space defined by the cultural values of a particular group. Ex. religions who claim space occupied by other countries and there are therefore conflicts: cognitive space. How space is produced: human activities produce space, society constantly produces space by assigning economic or cultural or social value to space.
