GEG 1302 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Ethnic Enclave
Document Summary
Definitions of ethnicity commonly point to a group of people with a common ancestry and a shared culture. Very similar to the definition by max weber (sociologist), 1968. Ethnicity is something you are born with. Ethnicity is rooted in kinship (primordial affinities), but the expression of this identity is rooted in the structures and opportunities available to the group in the broader society. If the ethnic identity can"t be expressed it is meaningless. Is a perspective that that is interested in specific contexts (economic, political, social, structural) & how these influence the expression of identity. & unions); where groups live & in what concentration/proximity; and characteristics of neighbours & neighbouring. People who are not primordially linked may begin to take on characteristics of an ethnic group, due to structuring. Canadian government has historically interested in ethnic ancestry. Focus on ancestry and not how people define their own ethnic identities. Identity may not match ancestry, or ancestry may not be known.
