Document Summary

While the overall global population is growing there is significant geographic variation. 1815: global population = 1 billion, 1900 = 1. 6 billion, 2011 = 7 billion. Population will continue to grow, at least until the mid-century. In the past, concerns were focused on famine, disease. Today the major concern is the capacity of a global environment to sustain a population. Water and energy resources, as well as waste production, land use. Bird migration & population change: eastern mediterranean (lebanon, west bank, israel) is a major migratory route (europe to africa), and these species are major pollinators, and ecologically important. This region has been experiencing enormous population growth. Wetlands along the jordan river are crucial to migration, and thus the ecology of both africa and europe, but are being drained for settlement & agriculture (as is the river). The wetlands represent one of the few fresh water resting grounds along the migratory path.
